มีการกล่าวกันว่า การแปล เกิดขึ้นและมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ โดยอาจเริ่มมาจากนักกวี หรือ นักเขียนชาวกรีกโบราณ ที่หลงรัก ชื่นชอบ ในตัวอักษร และภาษาที่สละสลวย จนอยากถ่ายทอดออกมาเป็นตัวหนังสือ

และเมื่อบทความ หรือ บทกวีเหล่านั้นเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของบุคคลมากมาย จึงก่อให้เกิดการเผยแพร่อย่างกว้างขวางไปสู่สาธารณชน และกระจายไปทั่วโลก

จากหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่เผยแพร่โดย วิกีพีเดีย กล่าวว่า การแปลที่แพร่หลาย และเป็นที่นิยมอย่างมากมายเกิดขึ้นในช่วงศตวรรษกลาง (Middle- Ages) เป็นการแปลภาษาอาราบิค ไปสู่ภาษาลาติน

คุณสมบัติของเราเป็นเช่นใด
แน่นอนครับ ใครๆก็อยากเรียนมหาวิทยาลัยดีๆ แต่มหาวิทยาลัยดีๆ เขาก็ย่อมต้องมี requirement ที่เข้มข้นด้วย เพื่อคัดคนที่มีคุณภาพจริงๆเข้ามา เพราะฉะนั้นหากน้องๆ ไม่ได้เตรียมตัวมาตั้งแต่เนิ่นๆ ได้เกรดเฉลี่ย สองต้นๆ ก็ไม่ควรจะเสียเวลาไปสมัครมหาวิทยาลัย top 10 ของเขาให้เสียเวลา เสียค่าสมัครเปล่าๆ ไหนจะต้องสอบ TOEFL หรือข้อสอบอื่นๆให้ได้คะแนนสูงลิ่ว ตามที่ทางมหาวิทยาลัยต้องการอีก ยกเว้นเสียในกรณีที่ว่าน้องมี letter of recommendation ที่เด็ดจริงๆ เช่น ท่านรัฐมนตรี รับรองให้ หรืออะไรอย่างนี้ ก็น่าจะช่วยได้นะครับ เพราะฉะนั้นให้ประเมินคุณสมบัติของตัวเองดีๆ ก็จะตัดตัวเลือกไปได้อีกมาก

บางที่หากผลการเรียนไม่ดีไม่เป็นไร เขาให้เรียนภาษากับเขาเพิ่มเติมก่อนรับเข้าจริง ก็จะเสียเวลาเพิ่มอีกครึ่งปีก็มี เราพร้อมหรือเปล่า หรือเราอยากจบเร็วๆ จะได้กลับมาทำงานหาเงินเร็วๆ บางสาขาวิชาถ้าจะเข้าไปเรียน เราต้องเรียนวิชาเสริมหรือที่เรียกว่า prerequisite ก่อนอีกเป็นปีก็มี เราพร้อมหรือเปล่า ถ้าเราคิดไปก่อน ก็อาจเรียนเสียตั้งแต่ที่นี่ได้ เพื่อให้เขารับรองก่อน ประหยัดกว่ามากนะครับ ทุกอย่างคิดไว้ล่วงหน้า วางแผนไว้ก่อนจะดีกว่า

ข้อจำกัดอื่นๆ
สิ่งหนึ่ง ที่เราควรจะคำนึงถึงไม่ใช่น้อย เพื่อเลือกสถานที่ศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศก็คือ ข้อจำกัดส่วนตัวของเรา ที่บางครั้งอาจไม่เหมือนคนอื่น อาทิเช่น เราขับรถไม่ได้ เราแพ้อากาศหนาว หรือเราต้องการไปทำงานร้านอาหารหาประสบการณ์ หรือเป็นคนชอบธรรมชาติอยู่กับเมืองมาพอแล้ว หรือเป็นสาวสังคมอยู่ป่าเขาไม่ได้ เป็นต้น ไล่เรียงมานะครับ คิดดีๆ เพราะเราจะต้องอยู่สถานที่แห่งนี้ เป็นเวลาไม่น้อย บางคนกลายเป็นคนละคน ซึมเศร้าไปเลย เพราะไม่มีความสุข แต่จำเป็นต้องอยู่เพื่อเรียนให้จบ

หลังจากน้องถามคำถามทั้ง 4 ข้อกับตัวเองแล้ว รับรองว่าจะเหลือที่เรียนให้น้องเลือกน้อยไปโขทีเดียว ต่อไปนี้เราก็เริ่มเข้าไปไล่ดูมหาวิทยาลัยของเราได้แล้ว ก็มาจับคู่กับความต้องการของเราว่าตรงกันหรือเปล่า แล้วก็ค่อยๆตัดออกไป นะครับ เท่านี้ก็จะสามารถตัดสินใจเลือกมหาวิทยาลัยในสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่น้องจะไปเรียนต่อต่างประเทศได้ง่ายยิ่งขึ้น โชคดีนะครับทุกคน

บทความนี้ผมเขียนขึ้นมาจากประสบการณ์โดยตรงในการหาที่เรียนต่อต่างประเทศ ในสมัยที่ไปเรียนต่อที่สหรัฐอเมริกา สำหรับน้องๆที่มีเพื่อน หรือญาติอยู่ที่นั่น แล้วต้องการไปอยู่กับเพื่อนหรือญาติคงจะไม่มีปัญหาเท่าไหร่ เพราะเราก็มุ่งมั่นไปที่เดียวเลย

แต่สำหรับน้องๆที่ผ่านมาเจอบทความนี้และลงมืออ่าน คงจะประสบปัญหาเหมือนผมในตอนนั้นที่เริ่มจากไม่รู้อะไรเลย และงมโข่งอยู่นานกว่าจะได้ข้อมูลอะไรต่างๆ ต้องเสียเวลา เสียเงิน เสียกำลังใจไปเยอะกว่าจะได้เรียน มหาวิทยาลัยในสหรัฐอเมริกามีเป็นพันแห่ง กระจายกันอยู่ทั่วประเทศ ทั้งที่เรียน ทั้งภูมิประเทศ ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง มากมายไปหมด ไม่รู้จะเลือกที่ไหนดี แล้วถ้าเลือกแล้วจะผิดพลาดหรือเปล่า เพราะเป็นการเลือกที่สำคัญไม่อยากผิดพลาด

ดังนั้นผมจึงอยากจะแบ่งปันประสบการณ์และบอกกับน้องๆที่กำลังหาที่ หรือหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับการเรียนต่อต่างประเทศ โดยวิธีการที่ผมจะเสนอก็คือ การตั้งคำถามให้กับตัวเองเป็นขั้นเป็นตอนดังต่อไปนี้ เพื่อจำกัดสถานที่ต่างๆให้แคบลง และเหลือที่เหมาะกับเรามากที่สุด มาลองทำตามไปเป็นขั้นเป็นตอน แล้วก็หาข้อมูลตามไปด้วย มั่นใจว่าหลังจากทำทุกขั้นตอนแล้ว น้องๆคงได้ประโยชน์จากบทความนี้บ้าง ไม่มากก็น้อย

คำถามแรกที่สำคัญที่สุด ที่น้องๆทุกคนต้องถามตัวเองก่อน ในกรณีที่ blank จริงจัง ตั้งแต่เริ่มต้นจริงๆ ทราบอย่างเดียวว่าเราอยากจะไปเรียนต่อต่างประเทศ แต่นอกนั้นไม่รู้อะไรเลย ก็คือ “เราจะเรียนอะไร” คำถามนี้เราต้องหาคำตอบให้ชัดเจน และไม่คลุมเครือเพื่อจะใช้เป็นแนวทางในการหาที่เรียนต่อไปได้ เช่น เราจะเรียนต่อ MBA, สายวิศวกรรมศาสตร์, IT หรืออะไรก็ตาม

ต้องหาคำตอบให้ชัดเจนก่อนครับ มหาวิทยาลัยชื่อดังในสหรัฐอเมริกานั้น ไม่ได้หมายความว่าจะดี จะเด่น ไปซะทุกสาขาวิชานะครับ บางแห่งดังสายวิศวกรรมระดับโลก แต่สายภาษาไม่ดัง ไม่มีคุณภาพเลย เพราะไม่ได้เน้นก็มี อย่างนี้เราก็ตัดไปได้เยอะแล้วครับ

งบประมาณมีเท่าใด
ข้อจำกัดอันนี้ สร้างข้อแตกต่างได้มากทีเดียว ลองหาข้อมูลของตัวเองดูว่าจริงๆแล้วมีงบประมาณเท่าไหร่ ไม่อั้นหรือเปล่า หรืออั้นประมาณไหน ควรจะมีคำตอบไว้ในใจ เราได้ทุนจากองค์กรสถาบันแห่งไหนมาหรือเปล่า หรือใช้เก็บเงินมาเอง หรือใช้เงินจากทางบ้าน หากทางบ้านคุณมีฐานะดี และคุณไม่จำเป็นต้องเกรงใจคุณพ่อ คุณแม่ คุณก็มีทางเลือกมากขึ้น สามารถอยู่ที่มีค่าครองชีพแพงเท่าใดก็ได้ เลือกเรียนมหาวิทยาลัยที่แพงแค่ไหนก็ได้ ซึ่งเป็นข้อได้เปรียบ แต่หากมีข้อจำกัดทางด้านงบประมาณ เมืองใหญ่ทั้งหลาย เช่น นิวยอร์ค มิชิแกน ก็อาจไม่เหมาะกับคนเบี้ยน้อย หอยน้อยอย่างเราๆนะครับ นอกจากข้าวของจะแพงแล้ว ยังมีสิ่งล่อตา ล่อใจให้เสียเงินเต็มไปหมด เลี่ยงได้ก็เลี่ยงไปตั้งแต่แรกดีกว่า

บางมหาวิทยาลัยในสหรัฐอเมริกานั้น เขาจะเน้นมีทุนวิจัย ให้เยอะ หรือมีให้เป็นผู้ช่วยสอนให้เราได้รายได้พิเศษ เราก็พิจารณาเป็นทางเลือกได้ ถ้าได้จริงๆแล้ว เราก็จะมีรายได้เยอะเลยนะครับ แถมอาจได้ลดค่าเรียนด้วย ไม่ต้องไปทำงานเสริมให้เหนื่อย เอาเวลาไปตั้งใจเรียน หาประสบการณ์ด้านอื่นได้อีก ในขณะที่บางแห่งนั้นไม่มี เราก็ต้องจ่ายเองเต็มๆทุกอย่าง

หลังจากตัดสินใจแล้วว่าจะเรียนอะไร และเรามีงบประมาณ หรือแหล่งเงินสนับสนุนเท่าไหร่อย่างไรแล้ว ก็ถึงเวลาที่จะมาย้อนดูตัวเองว่าเรามีอะไรบ้าง และเราพร้อมแค่ไหนที่จะไปเรียนอะไรที่ไหน ลองมาพิจารณากันเลยครับ
